YouTube ads are skipped or kept in the first five seconds. A boarding method for hook, product proof, and end card that matches how people actually watch.

A YouTube ad is not a 30-second TVC with a skip button. Viewers decide in the first five seconds whether you exist. Board that fact, or the rest of the sequence is decoration.

## Frame 1–3 are the whole job

| Time | Job | Typical size |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 0–2s | Pattern interrupt: motion, face, or a specific claim | CU or unexpected WS |
| 2–5s | Name the product and the promise | MCU + pack or UI |
| 5–15s | Proof: demo, before/after, or one scene | Mix |
| Last 3s | End card: name, URL, repeating claim | Graphic + product |

If the product is not identifiable by second five, the skip is rational. Put that as a note on the frame, not in a slide after the board.

## Sound-off is the default

A large share of TrueView and Shorts inventory plays without sound until the user unmutes. Every hook frame needs a readable super or a visual that works silent. VO-only hooks fail this test.

## Board two lengths from one sequence

YouTube buys 6s bumpers, 15s, and 30s from the same idea. Build one board, then mark which frames survive in the 6s cut. If the 6s cannot hold the claim, the 30s is not a tighter version of anything — it is a different ad.

[CineoBoard](/) keeps duration on each frame, so you can duplicate the sequence, delete frames, and re-time without rebuilding drawings. The [animatic](/blog/how-to-make-an-animatic) is how you check the 6s actually is 6s.

## FAQ

### Should I storyboard YouTube Shorts the same way?

Vertical, face-led, captions on screen, product in the first two seconds. Same discipline, different aspect ratio. Set the board to 9:16 before you draw or every frame will be recropped.

### Do I need a separate tool from TVC boarding?

No. You need aspect ratio, duration and a review link. That is ordinary [storyboard software](/storyboard-software), not a social-specific app.
