An insert is a shot of an object (phone, logo, hands, key) cut into a scene. First-pass boards forget inserts; the day then invents them.

An **insert** is a close shot of an object that has to be cut into a scene: a phone screen, a logo, a hand on a door, a product pour. It is usually a new setup even when the story beat already has a master.

First passes skip inserts because they are not “cinematic.” Then the day invents them under pressure, without continuity photos. Put them on the board. [Coverage](/glossary/coverage).

## How to board an insert

- Give it a shot code
- Give it a duration (often 1–2s)
- Note whose POV if it has to match an [eyeline](/glossary/eyeline)
- Save the object as an element so it matches the wide
