Producers say “send the board” and mean two different documents. Mix them up and the day is planned off the pretty one.
Presentation board
It sells. Fewer panels, more rendering, cheated geography, music implied rather than timed. Financiers and brand directors need this. It is allowed to lie a little about how many setups exist.
Shooting board
It counts. Every unique camera position, including inserts and repeats. Footers have shot codes, size, lens, movement, duration. Drawings can be boxes. Coverage is the point.
How to get from one to the other
Film storyboard · glossary: shooting board.
- Lock story beats on the presentation pass
- Duplicate the project (or version) before adding coverage — do not bury the pretty board
- Add overs, singles, inserts
- Freeze codes; reordering playback must not rename
12-A - Export the shot list sorted by setup for the AD
