Make a storyboard without drawing or generative AI

Updated

Make a storyboard without drawing or generative AI. Manually arrange illustrated scenes, characters and props, preserve continuity, then export PNG or PDF.

You do not need to draw or generate images with AI to make a useful storyboard. A storyboard has to communicate sequence, framing and action; polished illustration is optional. CineoBoard lets you manually assemble each frame from illustrated locations, characters, objects and speech bubbles in the browser. Start a free six-cell board without entering a card.

A no-AI storyboard maker you control

Creator does not generate a frame from a prompt. You choose every scene, character and prop, then place, crop, resize and layer them yourself. The result changes only when you edit it, so a revised caption or camera cue does not replace the cast or redraw the room.

This manual workflow is useful when you need predictable blocking or want to decide each shot directly. It also avoids spending generation credits while you test the sequence.

The no-drawing workflow

This is closer to blocking a set than drawing a comic. You decide where the camera looks, who is present and what changes from one frame to the next.

  1. Pick a scene for the location.
  2. Add one or more characters and choose a matching pose where available.
  3. Place props, signs, effects or camera overlays.
  4. Write the action in the caption and choose a shot size such as WS, MS, CU, OTS or POV.
  5. Duplicate a useful cell, then change only the action or framing for the next beat.
  6. Sign in to save to the cloud, share a read-only link or download PNG, PDF or JSON.

What you can change after placing art

A placed asset is still editable. You can move, resize, rotate, flip, crop, reorder layers and group objects. Scenes support visual adjustments including crop, tint, weather and lighting. Text, speech bubbles and captions can carry dialogue or action when the picture alone is not enough.

Some layered character kits allow detailed pose and color changes. Other illustrated characters use a set of prepared pose images. CineoBoard does not claim that every character has the same pose controls; use the pose chooser shown for the selected asset.

Build continuity without redrawing or regenerating

The fastest way to keep a character or location consistent is to reuse the same asset. Duplicate the previous cell, preserve the cast and set, then change pose, expression, prop position or shot size. Because the objects are selected assets rather than regenerated images, the person’s face, clothing and room remain the same between adjacent frames unless you replace them.

For film work, add a wide master, two over-the-shoulders and close-ups from the same location. For a classroom or business sequence, use the same cast across a beginning–middle–end strip. The visual vocabulary stays readable even when you cannot sketch.

Illustrated library and uploads

Creator groups assets into scenes, characters, items, speech bubbles, animations, shapes, infographics, science, worksheets and camera tools. Search and category rails help narrow the library. The free plan exposes a starter selection in each category.

Full Creator unlocks the complete current library and lets you upload your own reference images. Upload is useful when a product, costume, location or logo must match the real thing. Only upload material you have permission to use.

What the paid plan changes

Six cells and starter assets are free. Full Creator adds up to 100 cells, premium layouts, the complete illustrated library, image uploads and high-resolution exports without the CineoBoard watermark. It costs $4.99 for the first 30 days, then $11.99/month, and you can cancel anytime. Review Storyboard Creator pricing, or open the full Creator offer.

When this method is a good fit

NeedIllustrated assembly works well?
Shot planning for a short videoYes — add shot size and action per cell
Classroom visual sequenceYes — use classic, timeline, chart or worksheet layouts
Client rough before custom artYes — establish sequence before commissioning frames
Exact proprietary character designUpload approved art or use a storyboard artist
Final concept artUse an illustrator; a board solves sequence rather than finish

FAQ

Can I storyboard if I cannot draw at all?

Yes. Choose and arrange existing art, then rely on captions and shot sizes to remove ambiguity. Clear blocking communicates more than decorative drawing with no camera decision.

Can I make a storyboard without generative AI?

Yes. The browser Creator is a direct editing tool. You choose and place the assets yourself, so one change does not regenerate the rest of the sequence.

Can I use my own images?

Yes with full Creator. Upload images you own or are licensed to use, place them in cells and combine them with captions, shapes and library assets.
