Hand-drawn storyboard-style cover comparing CineoBoard and StoryTribe

StoryTribe is a free online storyboard maker for classrooms and quick decks. CineoBoard is a local-first production tool with cloud project management, Slack and Teams, an agent API and an in-board assistant.

The verdict

StoryTribe is a great free sketch pad for a class assignment or a quick pitch frame. It is not built to carry a paid production through revisions, approvals and delivery — that is where CineoBoard starts.

Made for learning vs made for delivery

StoryTribe optimises for the first ten minutes: open a tab, drag a character, get a frame. That is exactly right for education, UX sketches and internal marketing decks.

A commercial or a series lives past those ten minutes. It needs the third revision, the client comment on frame 12, the shot list that matches the call sheet, and a record of who changed what. CineoBoard treats the board as a production document from the first frame.

The offline problem nobody mentions

Browser-only tools assume the connection. Pre-production happens in scout vans, on planes and in basements with hostile Wi-Fi. Reframe writes locally first, so the board is never gated on a network round trip; the cloud project layer catches up when it can.

One workspace instead of five tools

CineoBoard is a local-first storyboarding app called Reframe paired with a cloud workspace for projects, scenes and shot management. Boards render and play back on your own machine, then sync to a shared project layer with Slack and Microsoft Teams notifications, an API and CLI that agentic coding tools such as Codex can drive, and an Intercom-grade CineoBoard Assistant that answers questions, edits and organises work inside the board.

The practical result is that a StoryTribe workflow usually means StoryTribe plus a spreadsheet plus Drive plus Slack plus email threads. CineoBoard collapses those into one project record, with the notifications posted where your team already talks.

  • Scene and shot statuses instead of filenames
  • Frame-level comments and approvals instead of email threads
  • PDF, PPTX, CSV and MP4 exports from the same source of truth

Choose CineoBoard if

  • The board is a deliverable a client pays for
  • You need scene ownership, statuses and revision history
  • You need the board to keep working when the venue Wi-Fi does not
  • You want automation and an assistant doing the repetitive board work

Choose StoryTribe if

  • You are teaching storyboarding to a class and need zero-friction signup
  • A single one-off board is the whole job
  • You want free above everything else

FAQs

Is StoryTribe good enough for a client project?

For a single, simple board with one round of feedback, often yes. Once there are multiple scenes, reviewers and revisions, the missing project layer becomes the bottleneck.

Does CineoBoard need drawing skills?

No. You can block frames from a written beat, reuse saved characters and locations, or draw by hand in Reframe — usually a mix of all three.
