CineoBoard vs Lucidchart

Updated · 6 min read

Hand-drawn storyboard-style cover comparing CineoBoard and Lucidchart

Lucidchart is a diagramming tool for flows, structures and technical visuals. CineoBoard is a storyboard tool for shots, scenes and production data. One diagrams systems; the other pre-visualises sequences.

The verdict

Lucidchart is the right tool when the deliverable is a flowchart, an org chart, a wireframe or a technical diagram. When the deliverable is a shooting board with shot sizes, lenses, timing and a synced shot list, Lucidchart's diagram canvas becomes the wrong abstraction.

Systems vs sequences

Lucidchart diagrams systems: flows, hierarchies, relationships, architectures. The nodes and edges represent things and connections. A storyboard represents a sequence: frame 1, frame 2, frame 3, in order, with shot data on every frame.

CineoBoard enforces the sequence. Frames are ordered, numbered and carry shot size, lens, duration and camera movement. Reorder a frame and the shot list, the timing and the export update automatically.

Technical diagram vs shooting document

Lucidchart diagrams are technical artifacts: they document a system, a process or a structure. They are not designed to become a shot list, a schedule or an animatic.

CineoBoard is designed to become all of those. The board is the source of truth for the production: the shot list is a view, the animatic is a playback, the PDF is an export.

When Lucidchart is the right call

If the team needs a diagramming tool for flowcharts, org charts, wireframes, network diagrams or technical documentation, Lucidchart is the right tool. It has shapes for everything, real-time collaboration and integrations with the tools teams already use.

CineoBoard is not trying to replace Lucidchart for diagramming. It is trying to replace the Lucidchart board you tried to use as a storyboard and found wrong.

Choose CineoBoard if

  • You need shot size, lens, duration and camera movement on every frame
  • The board has to become a shot list, an animatic and a PDF from one source
  • You want frames ordered and numbered as a sequence, not placed as nodes in a graph
  • You need offline editing and playback

Choose Lucidchart if

  • You want a flowchart, org chart or wireframe, not a storyboard
  • Your team already uses Lucidchart for technical diagrams
  • The visual is a system or process, not a sequence of shots

FAQs

Can I use Lucidchart for a storyboard?

You can place images in a sequence in Lucidchart, but it lacks shot data, timing, shot list sync and animatic support. It is a diagramming tool, not a storyboard tool.

Does CineoBoard have diagramming features?

No. CineoBoard is a storyboard tool, not a general diagramming tool. For flowcharts and org charts, use Lucidchart, Miro or a similar tool.
